DC Council Getting Cold Feet Over Online Gambling Plan
Washington DC became the first area in the US to regulate online gambling at the end of 2010
and the games were expected to be offered online by September. That projection
however
now may be delayed because some council members are getting cold feet.On Wednesday
a hearing was held on the issue
and several people complained that proper procedure was not followed before the online gambling law took effect. The objection was more for how the revenue would be split from the gaming
than the gaming itself.”I have met with representatives of the chief financial officer and DC Lottery in light of yesterday’s hearing and am pleased that they are taking immediate action in response to concerns raised before the committee
” said DC Council member Jack Evans
as reported by NBC Washington. “We have agreed to postpone implementation of any ‘hot spots’ until clear rules are in place that guarantee prior community input.”Many states have been attempting to end online gambling prohibition and bring millions of dollars in revenue to their state budgets
but change in the area of gambling is always slow to take place. Lawmakers for decades have used religion as a way to keep Americans from gambling
but the 2008 economic recession has caused many lawmakers to re-examine their stance on the issue.In Washington DC
the council approved gambling in the fourth quarter of 2010. At the time
not much was made of the approval. When online gambling revenue was included in the budget for this year
opponents started to look into the law. Congress had a chance to debate and object the law earlier this year
but did not.The Associated Press quoted several people who were opposed to the new form of gambling on Thursday. The opposition came from many different levels
from citizen groups
