South Africans Reminded Online Gambling Illegal
After the recent court case that resulted in the closure of the Piggs Peak Online Casino, Rob Davies, the South African Minister of Trade and Industry, has reminded and warned South Africans that online gambling is still considered to be illegal in South Africa. Although there have been recommendations to regulate online gambling, the Gambling Review Commission’s recommendations have not bee approved by the gambling board at this time. Minister Davies warned: “If you’re a South African and you participate in online gambling and you win, your winnings are the proceeds of an illegal activity.” The Minister further noted that “Unless or until we take a decision that we run a license (allowing online gambling) and in what form and what way – I think it will be a subject of a massive debate if we do indeed decide to go this route. I think everyone needs to know that they must not engage in this activity.” Davies formed the Gambling Review Commission in 2009. The Gambling Review Commission has recommended that online gambling be legalized and regulated. While the gambling industry is growing in size, the South African Parliament has still not approved the suggestions that have been made regarding online gambling. There are those that feel that because gambling problems have a particularly high rate in South Africa, the way that gambling in general should be marketed should be as a hobby and not as if it is “a life-changing possibility.” Davies said: “Among ordinary people, gambling is promoted as a life-changing possibility, including the Lotto … when in fact anyone that goes in with that presumption is going to be sadly disappointed.” He further noted: “If you want to play these games, you must be prepared to take the entertainment value. If that’s entertainment, and you must be prepared to lose, because the only consistent winnings are (for) the people who run the operations.” Related Posts Halloween Frightfest Bonus at Rushmore Casino EGR Nominations Favor William Hill Gambling Privacy in the UK is at Risk Halloween Fortune Slot in Playtech Online Casinos Now Mega Moolah Hit at Close to 4 Million Share on Facebook, Twitter, MySpace…
